Are Credit Card Perks of Yesterday a Thing of the Past?

Thursday, June 5th, 2008
  • Many people across the nation have opened up their mailbox to find the dismaying letter from their credit card companies which informs them that their credit card rewards programs have changed. Understandably, most people are not happy to hear this news. The economy is in a precarious state and the average person is in a position to try to get as much money back in his or her pocket as possible. Reduced credit card rewards are cutting in to the benefits they thought they would be able to get for the money that they are spending. Is this trend going to continue or is it just a passing phase that the credit card companies are going through in this financially troubled time?

  • The reality is that credit card companies are indeed cutting back on some of the perks that they offer on their credit cards. However, the rewards are not going away entirely. Instead, they are being reduced. Credit card companies that previously offered 3%-5% cash back rewards on limited types of expenses are now cutting back to offering only 1%-3% cash back. Likewise, credit card companies that would offer bonus points for certain types of expenses (such as the first purchase on the card) have now lowered the amount of bonus points that they are offering at those times. The rewards are still there; they are simply diminished.

  • There are two major reasons that credit card companies are currently in the process of making this change. The first is that they are struggling to manage their own spending in a time when many businesses simply aren’t profiting the way that they used to. As the economy faces a financial downturn, less people go out and spend their money which means the credit card companies are losing some business. They have to cut back. More importantly, though, credit card companies are making these changes because their competitors have made these changes. With fewer companies offering great perks, other credit cards don’t have to offer the same great perks to appeal to people applying for credit cards.

  • These issues may mean bad news for credit card holders in the short-term but they ultimately mean that credit card rewards are bound to return to a better state again in the future. First of all, the economy will eventually move into a better position which will allow credit card companies to be able to once again afford to offer better perks to customers. This will ultimately cause some credit card companies to return to their old ways of offering great perks which will then lead other companies to have to do the same in order to compete in the market for the attention of credit card applicants.

  • In the meantime, consumers just have to ride out the wave with a savvy approach to dealing with the problem. Always read all literature that comes from your credit card company so that you are immediately aware of any changes to your credit card rewards. As these changes take place, consider seeking out new credit cards that offer better perks. By throwing your weight behind the companies that are offering the best benefits, you’ll be able to help drive the competition to offer better rewards again sooner rather than later.
