Credit Cards Can Help Separate Your Personal from Your Business

Friday, December 12th, 2008

As any entrepreneur going in to business for themselves knows, it is likely that you will rely on your own personal monies businessto fund your business. What can be a very trying but exciting time, many new business owners will fail to realize right away, the importance of separating your business from your personal life. It may seem like a silly thing to say as one blends in to the other for many, but it is a very valid point.  So what is the best way to start the separation? Well, a credit card is one way to get a head start on firming up your business on many ways. Here are just some of the reasons a credit card can help your business find a solid financial foundation.

Building Company Credit

While it is true that initially, it will likely be your personal financial information and credit worthiness that your business relies on to get started. But after some time, it will become increasingly important for your business to build up a credit history of its own. In applying for a business credit card and using that credit card responsibly for business related purchases only, your company name will begin to build a solid credit history which will come in handy later when you apply for loans and other financing to further grow your business. Like your personal credit record, a good business credit history is equally important.

Easier Accounting

Using a credit card for all your business purchases makes it much easier to track your overall monthly business expenses, a process that is key to a new business surviving financially and adhering to a business plan. Using the monthly statements to track and categorize your spending, will leave you better prepared to plan financially for the future. If you are using cash, checks, and your own personal funding sources to make purchases for your business, you will likely have one big headache come tax time.

Frees Up Cash Flow

If your business is making money but not enough to keep cashing flowing easily, a credit card can help pick up the slack while your business continues to grow. You can better account for profits by not having to turn back around and spend the cash made. Using your credit card responsibly should allow you to collect profits during the month and still make payments, preferably in full, at the end of the month to keep your interest rate from rising.

Larger Credit Limits

Typically, a business credit card will be afforded a higher credit limit than a personal card would. Of course, it all depends on individual finances. Having a higher credit limit through a business credit card might give you a little added flexibility during the start up phase, when you need to make the bigger purchases to sustain an office, such as computers, copiers, or other needed materials.

More Spending Flexibility

Having a business credit card allows you to shop more efficiently for the things your company needs. When you deal with only cash or checks, you may be limited from finding the best values for your money. You may not be able to shop online using checks and ultimately it is not wise to run up your own personal credit cards on behalf of your business. You can do your homework and research the best deals around the world for what you need to have to start growing your business. A credit card gives you more buying power and better protection in the event of fraudulent transactions. Cash and checks certainly will not do that.
