How Credit Card Debt Impacts Your Life
Friday, February 8th, 2008We all know that having excessive credit card debt is a bad thing. It can put a financial crunch on your life and cause you significant amounts of stress. It can also create problems with your credit history and make it difficult for you to obtain the loans that you need to have a comfortable life. However, most people don’t really think about the full extent of how credit card debt impacts them on a daily basis. Sometimes just taking a look at this information can help to motivate people to get their credit card debt under control.
Here are some of the areas of life that can be negatively affected by credit card debt:
• Relationships. Credit card debt can put a strain on all of the relationships in your life. If you are married or in a relationship with shared expenses, your credit card debt can be a significant source of arguments in the relationship. If you live with roommates, your financial troubles can cause issues with their bills and result in discord in your home. And even the activities that you enjoy with friends can be affected when your credit card debt causes you to have trouble paying for your share of the expenses.
• Health. Credit card debt is a significant source of stress for many people. Stress translates directly into health problems. You can find yourself affected in areas of health that are quite serious, such as facing heart disease as a result of your stress. You can also find yourself dealing with daily discomfort such as fatigue and back pain as a result of the stress that you feel about your finances.
• Psychological well-being. In addition to your physical health, your emotional health can be impacted by credit card debt. You may feel low self-esteem because of your credit problems or you may experience anxiety as a result of your debt. Left unchecked, this can cause severe emotional health issues such as depression.
• Work. When we have credit card debt to pay off, we are forced to work for the sole purpose of earning enough money to pay off our debt. This results in people taking jobs that they don’t enjoy. This causes problems for them and also creates a situation in which a number of people are doing sub-par work because they don’t like what they do for a living.
In general, having an excessive amount of debt may cause problems in all areas of life. It leads to a reduced quality of life because so much time and energy goes in to dealing with the debt. It decreases positive relationships because you are too stressed out to manage those relationships well. And it can cause physical and emotional health problems that plague you for a lifetime. Looking at it this way, it begins to make sense that it’s in our best interest to take care of our credit card debt and learn how to use credit cards in a responsible, non-stressful way.
