Paying your Taxes by Credit Cards
Friday, January 18th, 2008It’s getting to be the time of year that W2s turn up in the mailbox and you find yourself feeling the pressure of taxes. Hopefully you’re going to get money back from the government this year. But if not, you’re probably trying to figure out how you’re going to make the payment that Uncle Sam is going to be demanding soon. Many people turn to their credit cards as a means of making their tax payment. There are both pros and cons to the use of credit cards for paying your taxes but overall they provide a convenient method of paying what you owe.
The main reason that people avoid using credit cards to pay their taxes is that there are often fees associated with the use of the cards. First of all, there’s the obvious fact that you can use the credit card now but you’ll still owe the money later. Second, if you don’t pay it off quickly, you could end up paying a lot of money in interest to your credit card company for the taxes that you already didn’t want to pay. And finally, the various service providers that can assist you in making credit card payments on your taxes all charge fees for their services.
Despite this, many people find that credit cards are a terrific option for making their tax payment. For one thing, they provide you immediately with the money that you need to make the payment in full. You can then stagger your credit card payment throughout the year to make paying off the total amount easier on your pocketbook. You can reduce the immediate stress that you feel about your taxes by paying them off now and then dealing with them down the line. Additionally, if you use a credit card that offers “rewards”, you can get a little something back for the money that you’re paying towards taxes this year.
If you have the money to pay your taxes out-of-pocket right now, then you should probably go that route. You’ll avoid the processing fees and spend the least amount of money total by doing it this way. However, if you’re like the average person and you don’t have that extra cash lying around, you can use your credit cards to get the taxes taken care of. As always with your credit cards, you’ll want to pay them back as quickly as possible so that you don’t rack up a lot of extra interest before it’s paid off. Besides, the faster that you pay it off, the faster that you’ll be able to start saving up money so that you have something to use for taxes at this time next year!
