Questions to Consider When Selecting New Credit Cards

  • Anyone who is interested in applying for additional credit cards should keep some important questions in mind as they make their selections. Having credit cards is only good if they serve a benefit to you. If you select the wrong cards, you can cause yourself headaches and hassles that increase the amount of stress that you feel in your life. To make sure that you make wise choices in your credit card selections, you should run through each of the following questions before applying.

  • First and foremost, ask yourself if you really need a new credit card. Many people who are immersed in credit card debt seek out additional cards to resolve the problem. If you’re just going to add more debt, then you should avoid getting a new card. Seek out another solution instead. If you do need a new card, ask yourself if this will mean that you can close out some of the other cards that you have open.

  • Next, ask yourself what you are primarily going to be using the card for. This will assist you greatly in choosing the right card. For example, if you are going to be using the card for monthly expenses and then paying it off immediately, you’re probably not going to worry excessively about the interest rate on the card. In contrast, if you are going to be using the card to transfer high balances to your new account, obtaining a low interest rate will be a primary concern.

  • Once you know what you’re going to be using the card for, you can ask yourself what type of rewards you would like in return. You should always make your credit cards work for you by getting a rewards card that will give something back to you. Some cards give you miles for airline tickets, others give you cash back on certain purchases, and still others offer you gift cards to different stores. Knowing what type of rewards you’re going to be most interested in will assist you in narrowing down your application options.

  • Finally, consider whether you’ll want to pay for any additional services provided by the card. Do you really need a credit card that comes with an annual report? Do you have such bad credit that the only card you can get is one with an annual fee? Make sure that you understand the terms of each card and ask yourself if you’re willing to accept them before you even fill out the application form.

  • You don’t ever want to submit a large number of credit card applications at once because this can reduce your credit score. By asking yourself detailed questions about the credit cards that interest you, you can make wise choices in which applications are even worth your time. If you fail to get approval for any of those applications, go back and review the answers to your questions to see if there’s a different card that makes more sense for you.
