Tips for Negotiating a Credit Card Payoff
Thursday, December 25th, 2008 While many people struggle to make ends meet, many more take for granted that they have no alternatives when it comes
to paying off their credit card debts. But, if you want to do the responsible thing and honor your financial responsibilities, it is within your right to negotiate a payoff.
Here are some tips for negotiating a payoff with your credit card company.
Contact Your Card Company Right Away
Procrastination can only make things worse when paying down debts. Ignoring the problem will not make it go away. So get on the phone and speak with a company representative about what you can do. If you are not satisfied with the results of your call, ask to speak to a manager until you find someone willing to help you.
Discuss The Fees
You should discuss all fees and penalties that have been added to your card. This includes late or over the limit fees, as well as annual membership fees. Not in every case will your request to have fees removed be honored but it certainly does not hurt to ask and if approved, your balance can be dramatically reduced. The results will depend on each individual credit card company and the policies they have created.
Discuss Your Interest Rates
This can be an effective way to reduce you balance and future debts. If you have been a solid customer during the life of your account, the credit card company may consider permanently lower your interest rates if they know you plan to pay off your balance in full. Some credit card companies will not be willing to approve a long-term change but will consider a temporary one to help you pay down your balance or pay off your card. Once new terms have been negotiated, ask to get a written confirmation that outlines the new conditions so you will be sure you are clear on the changes.
Be Persistent
Acting on our negotiations and following up on your work can benefit you greatly and financially. Do not be discouraged if you hit a few walls. Your persistence will pay off if you stick to your guns and work your way up the change of company personnel. As mentioned, if one person at the company is not willing to help you, call back at a later time until you find someone who will assist you.
All of these tips are possible but might not be available to you. If you have a strong history with a credit card company, you will certainly have more leverage in your negotiations. But even if you have missed a payment or two in the past, you still have the right to negotiate a pay off to your benefit. If the credit card company knows you are serious about paying off your balance, they might be more inclined to work through negotiations with you.
One important thing to remember is to keep your attitude in check, even if you face other bad attitudes from company representatives. You will get nowhere fast if you start out defensive. You can be a successful negotiator if you practice patience and perseverance.
You also want to make sure that you keep accurate records of all of your conversations with representatives from each individual conversation. Take notes during the call and make sure you get the correct name of each representative you speak with, what was said, and any changes to the account. You might need this information in the event a dispute arises or the changes of your agreement are not honored in a timely manner. It may also help to prepare you before the conversation to list question you may have and to have copies of recent statements available that show your current balance and account information.
