How to Establish Credit with a Student Credit Card
Many students simply want the funds to pay for things that are desired rather than establishing credit. However, what the student must realize is that credit is very important in the acquisition of personal loans, home loans, and car loans. The first step to achieving these things in life is by acquiring a student credit card and using it responsibly. This gives the student those desired funds while establishing credit as long as payments are made on time and limits are adhered to.
The credit score is very important for the student, especially after college is finished and a career is secured. It is the credit score that will determine whether or not that beautiful home or dream car will be acquired and what interest rate will be secured in the financing of these items. That is why it is important to keep these things in mind when a student is establishing credit through a student credit card:
• Try not to charge anymore than 30% of the balance. This can be figured by multiplying the total available credit on the card by .03. This will give the student the amount that can be charged.
• Make payments on time. There is a due date with a grace period that sometimes accompanies the card. Rather than utilizing the grace period, it is best to pay on the due date.
• The student should utilize the “no more than 30%” rule to avoid going over the limit.
• It is ideal for the student to not have too many credit cards. Having approximately 2 or 3 cards can help the student establish credit with multiple accounts since only having one account does not have the same effect.
• The student shouldn’t see credit line increases as a ticket to spend more money. Truthfully, it is a great idea to keep charging to a minimum because one never knows when an emergency situation may result in the need for the remaining available credit on a card. However, if this occurs, it is important to try and make sure that the balance is paid down to only 30% of the credit limit being occupied.
These are simple steps that can be taken with a student credit card to help the student to establish credit. Aside from searching the best interest rates and cards with low or no fees, once the card is acquired, responsible spending is very important. Through managing credit cards successfully in college, the student can learn how to manage funds in many ways that will go far into their future. That way the student never has to deal with such downfalls as bankruptcy or collections agencies.
