How to Stay Out of Trouble with Credit Cards
Credit cards are a terrific resource for people to use when they need to make
purchases. They offer more convenience than carrying around cash. They allow
people to buy things before their paycheck comes in. And they generally make
life a little bit easier. But credit cards can also get consumers in a lot of
trouble with debt.
Here are the tips that you need to follow to stay out of trouble with your
credit cards:
• Know what you’re spending. The biggest mistake that
credit card users make is putting expenses on cards and not tallying up the
total until the bill comes in. This makes debt accumulate quickly. You should
always be aware of what your credit card balances are so you can reign in your
spending when they get too high.
• Know how you’ll pay it
back. Many people spend without considering the fact that the money
needs to be put back. This causes debt to add up and finances to get out of
control. Plan to always pay back your spending the same month of purchase. For
purchases that are too big to stick to this plan, make a detailed budget on
paper of how you’re going to pay off the
balance.
• Understand the terms of each credit
card. Know what the fees are. Understand how the interest is
calculated. Figure out if your rewards are actually working for you. Go through
the details of your credit cards term by term to make sure that you know what
you’re doing with each of them.
• Be organized about your
credit cards. Don’t carry around twenty different cards with different
balances on them. Don’t assume that your statements will come in with enough
time for you to make the payment without late fees. You should have a
spreadsheet which shows you the balance and payments due on your cards and when
those payments must be made. Include the interest rate and any fees so you can
easily see which cards are working for you and which need to be tossed
out.
• Talk about credit. One of the reasons so
many people get into problems with credit cards is because they don’t talk
openly about finances with others. Find a finance mentor, speak with friends or
discuss spending with a spouse. Being open and communicative about money helps
to keep things clear. This makes it easier to stay on track with credit
cards.
Credit cards don’t have to cause you trouble. Follow these tips and be
responsible with your spending and you’ll have credit cards that work for you
instead of against you.
